BACKGROUND

Established on 11th November 1994, DUHOZANYE which mean “console each other” was started by 330 widows of genocide perpetrated against Tutsi in 1994 in former Shyanda commune in Southern Province who decided to combine their efforts to overcome the consequences of genocide and develop themselves to overcome the extreme poverty and reclaim their rights and dignity they had lost as women. With Rwanda Government policy on Unity and Reconciliation, promotion of Gender Equality, Women Empowerment Programs and National transition from emergency situation to national development.

DUHOZANYE has taken on a women Empowerment approach that reaches out and integrates other vulnerable women in the community. DUHOZANYE now operated in southern and western provinces, and serves Vulnerable women in self-reliance services units operating area.

As a civil society organization, Duhozanye plays its role in District Budget and Performance contract Preparations and engage its program participants in the process of preparation of district plans and budget to ensure the voices of women is heard. Duhozanye also empower women to participate in decision making organs from village to district level, to strive for women’s dignity and gender equality at all levels.
Duhozanye organization is open to work with any organization who strives for women empowerment and fighting against SGBV/VAWG. Duhozanye has extended the interventions that includes citizens mostly women and girls with the aim to ensure sustainable development among its constituency.
