WATER FOR GROWTH TEAM VISITS GENOCIDE SURVIVORS, ORPHANS

Gisagara, 13th May 2017: A delegation from the Water for Growth Rwanda programme visited Duhozanye Association in Gisagara district to pay tribute to survivors and orphans of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The association was formed at the end of 1994 to help console widows and orphans of the genocide by fostering social economic rehabilitation in a bid to enable their self-reliance after their tragic experiences.

During the visit, the Team Leader of Water for Growth Rwanda, Ebel Smidt handed over two sewing machines to the members of Duhozanye working at the association’s workshop. This support aims at further facilitating economic development.

“We are happy to be able to visit and console you in this time as we commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. We are impressed by your strength and entrepreneurship and hope that the items we have brought with us will support the work that you already do to improve your lives economically,” the Water for Growth Team Leader said.

Mr. Smidt thanked Adam Mucyaba, an intern at ISU (who was also raised at Duhozanye), for connecting the delegation with this association.

Since its inception, Duhozanye association has constructed 330 houses for beneficiaries, set up a memorial site for more than 3000 victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, provided vocational training (carpentry, sewing, knitting and hairdressing) as well as enabling access to health insurance for members, among others.
